WASHINGTON D.C. TO WELCOME OVER 400 CUBAN ARTISTS
Over four-hundred Cuban artists will perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. from May 8th through June 3rd, 2018. The unprecedented event is titled Artes de Cuba:De la Isla para el Mundo, and includes performances by Cuban legend Omara Portuondo. Included among the invited artists are painters Manuel Mendive, Roberto Fabelo, Esterio Segura, and Roberto Diago, musical groups like Van Van, the orchestra Failde and from Havana’s Liceo Mozartiano and musicians like Pablo and Haydee Milanes, Ulises Hernandez, various members of the Lopez-Nussa family, Yissy Garcia, Zule Guerra, Aldo Lopez-Gavilan and la Reina y la Real. Cuban born artists who reside outside of the island will also be participating, including Aymee Nuviola, Arturo O’Farril, Dafnis Prieto, Adonis Gonzalez, Mauricio Herrera, Yosvany Terry, Jose Parla and Emilio Perez.
The Kennedy Center will also host several Cuban dance and theatre companies like Havana’s Teatro El Publico, Argos Teatro, the Danza Malpaso and Irene Rodriguez’s dance companies, among others. Classic Cuban films like “Memorias del Subdesarrollo,” “Retrato de Teresa,” and “Conducta,” will be presented during Washington D.C.’s unofficial tribute to Cuba.
The festival will transport the culture of the largest of the Antilles to the U.S. capital and the beautiful Kennedy Center on the shores of the Potomac River. Over fifty events and performances by some of Cuba’s most acclaimed artists will perhaps help bridge the gap that has once again developed between the United States and Cuba. On Saturday May 12 all activities will be dedicated to a family day, with activities, performances and classes for the whole family. A performance by Cuba’s National Ballet will close out the event on June 3rd.
