CUBA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE EVENTS FOR JULY 2018
July is really hot in Cuba!!! It rains quite a bit, usually every afternoon and it’s very humid. But if you are traveling to our naughty island neighbor that month, here are a few events you might want to consider adding to your people to people itinerary, or whichever other category you may be traveling under.
July 1-July 7 Gibara International Film Festival; Gibara is a small coastal city in eastern Cuba’s Holguin Province. This will be the 14th edition of the Gibara International Film Festival which is dedicated to the science of the low-budget and culturally sensitive, alternative film production. The festival awards prizes, and includes workshops, film premieres, conferences, expositions, and of course you will be able to interact with the wonderful people of Gibara. The festival is sponsored by ICAIC and the Ministry of Culture of Holguin Province.
July 3-July 9 Santiago de Cuba Caribbean Festival of Fire; in its 38th edition, the Festival of Fire celebrates all things Caribbean from music and dance to literature and science, and this year it commemorates the anniversary of the founding of Santiago de Cuba and is dedicated to Puerto Rico. Its’ motto is “the Caribbean unites us.”
July 26 Celebrations and Commemorations; 26 of July Movement is the name of the small group that Fidel Castro led that was most responsible for forcing former Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista into exile on December 31, 1958. The date commemorates the failed attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Barracks in Santiago Province by that group in 1953. Both attacks failed, but the events of that day gave the movement its name, and the date is celebrated yearly in Cuba. Most businesses are closed on this day, and parades and other events celebrating the date are held throughout the island.
