HAVANA'S DOCTOR CAFE
HAVANA REASTAURANT REVIEW; DOCTOR CAFÉ
Doctor Café is one the little known yet excellent restaurants in Havana, Cuba. It is in the Havana municipality of Miramar, but close to Vedado. The setting is on the first floor of a small apartment building in what was probably the parking garage during the time that Cuba was a republic. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and the indoor area has great air conditioning. Dr. Café is decorated with wood, has wood siding and wooden tables and chairs. Something very unusual in Havana, where most restaurants/paladares have metal tables and chairs. This is a great place to stop for dinner if you’re staying in Havana, and will be going to the Tropicana Cabaret for the show. It’s on the way if you’re staying in Old Havana or Vedado, and much better than anything you will be served at Tropicana. The food is excellent here, from the steak to the fish and chicken, it is well prepared and the staff is attentive and fast. Main courses do not include side dishes, these must be ordered separately. The specialty of the house is grilling, and grill they do!
We had the grilled chicken, grilled snapper, and the lobster on our last visit, and everything was outstanding. Prices are high for Cuba, but not for visiting Americans. The average dinner prices out to $20 with appetizer and drinks, not too bad. I've never seen the place full, so you probably won’t need reservations. Doctor Café is in Miramar at Calle 28 #111 between 1st and 3rd, and the phone number is 7 203 4718. Doctor Café is open every day from 12pm until 12am. The original owner was a medical Dr., hence the name. By Frank Gonzalez
