MAY 2018 WAS THEATRE MONTH IN HAVANA
From May 11th through May 20th, 2018 Havana celebrated the tenth annual Latin American and Caribbean Theatrical May with performances and other activities organized by Cuba’s Casa de las Americas. The event is dedicated to regional theatre and this year included the participation of artists from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Martinica, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican delegation received a special place in this year’s event because of the difficulties currently being faced by that island due to hurricane Maria.
Theatre May in Havana 2018 included Flamenco and experimental dance, live music, theatre with universal and local themes, and inspiration from the past and hope for the future. All theatre groups that performed were required to participate in a workshop covering staging and preparation, a feature which was quite a success and proved very informative for all. Workshops covering various subjects, seminars, expositions, and book presentations made for the most comprehensive Theatrical May in Havana in the events history. Most of the Cuban theatre groups that participated this year were from Cuban provinces other than Havana, a marked contrast to previous years when groups from Havana have dominated Theatrical May.
