IBERO-CUBAN MUSIC FESTIVAL IN HAVANA

NICOLAS RUIZ ESPADERO MUSIC FESTIVAL JUNE 21-JUNE 24, 2018 IN HAVANA

Havana will celebrate the Nineteenth Century Romantic Spanish-Cuban Music Festival Nicolas Ruiz Espadero from June 21-June 24, 2018. Nicolas Ruiz Espadero was a nineteenth century Cuban pianist and composer who inspired many musicians on both side of the Atlantic. Concerts will be presented at various venues throughout Havana with tributes to violinist Jose White, on the one-hundredth anniversary of his death. Among the composers whose works will be included in the festival are Gaspar Villate, Cecilia Aritzi, Ignacio Cervantes, Jose Manuel Jimenez, and more. Villate, Cervantes and Aritzi were all students of Ruiz Espadero. The cultural links between Spain and Cuba go back five-hundred years-old and help explain how a musical genre known as la habanera, a nineteenth century musical style, became an identifying characteristic of Spain.

The project is a collaboration between Cuba’s National Music Museum, its Institute of Music, the Office of the City Historian of Havana, the Committee of Music Patrimony Esteban Salas, and Spain’s Catalan-Iberoamerican Cultural Association and La Sociedad para el Estudio de la Musica Isabelina.
