CUBAN BASEBALL IN 2020

The Cuban INDER, which is the organization that regulates baseball and all sports in Cuba, is thinking about making changes to the baseball season on the island. INDER is the acronym for the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, and among its many duties is running Cuba’s National Baseball Series, which is Cuba’s professional baseball league. The National Series season currently has a forty-five day-long first phase, after which the top six teams continue playing a forty-five game second phase. Then come the playoffs between the top four of the six teams and a final seven game championship.

The INDER is thinking of lengthening the first phase with all sixteen teams playing seventy-five games, then a forty-five game second phase with the play-offs and championship series remaining the same. It’s a great idea, but not what Cuban baseball needs.

What Cuba’s National Baseball Series needs is less teams, perhaps five or six, better stadiums and equipment, and players that are paid a few thousand dollars a month versus the current salary of forty dollars a month.
