CUBA HAS A PRIME MINISTER. AGAIN!
Cuba has not had a prime minister since 1976, but in reality, not since 1959. How is that possible? The prime minister of Cuba from February 1959 to 1976 was also the president, premier, commander in chief, head of the communist party and more, the infallible and omniscient Fidel Castro. Apparently in 1976 Castro decided he didn’t need the title of prime minister anymore and simply removed the title from his resume and Cuba’s governmental structure. From January 1959 through February 1959 Cuba’s last prime minister was Jose Miro Cardona, then Fidel Castro appointed himself to the position. As of December 21, 2019 new Cuban prime minister is the former Minister of Tourism and high-ranking Cuban army officer, Manuel Marrero Cruz.
The Cuban government doesn’t fix the island’s roads or sidewalks, can’t keep a steady supply of fuel at the pumps or basic consumer goods like cooking oil, flour, eggs on store shelves, but within the last two months started selling freezers, refrigerators, electric scooters and created the position and appointed a prime minister. The hospitals and schools are falling apart, doctors and teachers are paid less than $50 dollars a month in a country where consumer goods cost as much or more than they do in the US. Amazing what can be accomplished after only sixty years in power, and we can only wonder at what they have in store for the next sixty years?
If you’re keeping score, Cuba heads into the year 2020 with Miguel Diaz-Canel as president, Manuel Marrero Cruz as prime minister, and eighty-nine year-old Raul Castro head of the “revolutionary” Cuban communist party, which now sells freezers and refrigerators, and still runs the show on the island.
