SWIMMING BY CUBA’S NATIONAL AQUARIUM ON CUBA TRIP
Whenever my parents would take me to Cuba’s National Aquarium, I would throw a fit because I wanted to go in the ocean, but there was no where you could swim. As an adult when I would drive by the intersection of 1st Street and 70th Avenue, where the Aquarium stretches to the sea, in the Havana suburb of Miramar, I would stare at the open ocean and wonder why it wasn’t made accessible to swimmers. Well, now it seems someone heard me.
They’ve built little kiosks where you can sit and enjoy the ocean breeze and views of the Florida straits. There’s a small restaurant that sells drinks and a menu of traditional Cuban dishes. The shoreline has been opened to swimmers, but be careful, there is coral rock and you need to wear protective footwear or suffer the consequences. It’s a great escape from the heat and you can snorkel practically right next to your table.
Now when parents take their kids to the Aquarium, they can go home happy after a dip in the ocean. If you go you may find me there, as I’ve some to the conclusion that in my previous life I was a frog!
