HISTORIC TRIP TO CUBA BY SPAIN’S KING & QUEEN
On November 11th the king and queen of Spain arrived in Cuba in what is the first official visit to the island by a reigning Spanish monarch in the five-hundred-year shared history of both nations. The trip to Cuba by the Spanish monarchs coincides with the five-hundredth anniversary of the founding of Havana.
On Tuesday evening King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia made an unscheduled visit to Old Havana, the area of the city most associated with Cuba’s colonial period. Their visit caught many bystanders by surprise, and the king even took the time to pet one of Old Havana’s many “licensed” street dogs.
During the visit the queen received a guided tour of several vocational schools in Old HAVANA that are financed by the Spanish government. Besides Havana the Spanish monarchs also visited the eastern Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba, where they paid tribute to the Spanish dead of what is known in Cuba as the Second War of Independence, and in the U.S. as the Spanish-American War.
Their Majesty’s the King and Queen of Spain in Cuba! A historic trip for the celebration of Havana’s birthday.
