CUBAN BASEBALL 2019
Three weeks into Cuba’s 59th National Baseball Series team standings are not what was expected. Last year’s champion Las Tunas is in seventh place, and second place Villa Clara is in tenth. Currently Sanci Spritus is in first place with Cienfuegos two games behind, followed by Santiago and Matanzas. Only six teams will play past mid-October, when the first phase of the season ends, and the second phase begins.
The Cuban National Team did not do well this year at the Pan American Games in Peru, and National Team coach Rey Anglada is having a tough time with Havana’s Industriales who are currently in eleventh place, seven games behind Sanci Spiritus, and unlikely to make it to the second phase. On September 1st Industriales did manage to defeat Las Tunas 11 to 3, but the Las Tunas team of 2019 is not the championship team of last year.
