HAVANA ARTE Y MODA FASHION SHOW 2019
CUBA'S HAUTE COUTURE
This is a blog about the 2016 Havana Arte y Moda fashion show gala finale, and we are publishing it again because the 2019 Arte y Moda week is taking place next month from November 12-November 17th, 2019.
I do not consider myself a devotee of any fashion style, my grandmother’s advice always worked for me, la moda es la que te acomoda, which roughly translates to, fashion is what fits. It sounds much better in Spanish! When it comes time to dress, and do your hair and makeup, not only should you take your own tastes and established norms into account, you also must be aware of your own body shape and face, if you know what I mean. I simply do not think a woman looks attractive or even good just because she is wearing the latest “thing.”
When some friends invited my husband and I to a fashion show last week, it took me a while to say yes, it just isn’t something I’m into. When we finally arrived at Havana’s Museum of Bellas Artes and the show started, I realized it was not what I had expected. The hour and a half show was an avalanche of creativity and imagination, it was incredible! I soon realized I had seen the previous year’s edition of this show on TV, and seeing it live was much more satisfying. It is a shame that these events aren’t promoted properly in the Cuban capital, as many more people would have attend them, especially those with any connection to the creative arts and fashion. This was the sixth edition of Arte y Moda, as the event is known, and it is the only one of its kind in Cuba. It is a mixture of art, fashion, design, and I would say a little bit of everything. The protagonists of the evening were works of art, mostly paintings by Cuban artists ranging from old Cuban masters like Leopoldo Romanach, to some contemporary Cuban artists like Kcho. The fashion designers assigned a work of art, and then they must create a costume inspired by the artist’s piece. Most of the creations were fantastical, and were exhibited by a group of models which brought them to life with wonderful style. The runway walks were accompanied by choreographed lights and music, and some were very entertaining. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance by Cuban singer Luna Manzanares, who both opened and closed the event. The Art y Moda fashion show was quite the revelation, with modern art inspiring the destruction of traditional clothing styles!
